EPK - Mother Rose
Mother Rose are an Alternative Rock band from Southeast Los Angeles. Fusing acoustic and indie styles along with pulse beating modern rock, Mother Rose have made a name for themselves in the SELA music scene. Through their aggressive musical performances and their eclectic approach to music creation, music-goers should always anticipate a great show full of energy and excitement, making them a must-see band in LA.
The band was formed in 2009 by cousins Ruly and Chris Rivas, and the current lineup includes lifelong friends Edgar Rose and David Hernandez on bass guitar and rhythm guitar, respectively. The role of drummer has been filled by two people throughout the band’s career: brother/cousin Tony Rivas and longtime friend Snoopy Hernandez, both of whom have influenced the band greatly. Tony was the original drummer and the studio drummer on the band’s recent full-length album, The Man in All My Stories, and Snoopy was the primary writer for the drum parts in the album and is the current drummer for the band.
With 5 members, each with their own musical preference and writing style, there are songs in the band’s eclectic catalog of music for seemingly everyone. Singer/guitarist Ruly Rivas presents an enraged yet refreshing vocal and songwriting style, whose influences include Tom Waits, Bruce Springsteen, Kings of Leon, and Radiohead. Lead guitarist Chris Rivas brings a melodic and sometimes psychedelic approach to his guitar writing, influenced by artists like The Beatles, Pearl Jam, and St. Vincent. Bassist Edgar Rose brings his Spanish Rock and Folk Rock influences into his songwriting and bass playing, with influences that span from Heroes De Silencio to The Devil Makes Three. Rhythm guitarist David Hernandez brings to the table catchy melodies and heavy guitar riffs from his background in Heavy Metal and Hard Rock, with influences the likes of Chevelle, Deftones, and Trivium. Drummer Snoopy Hernandez has a Ska and Punk background, influenced by bands like Rancid and Ska-P, which brings a unique energy and aggressive edge to the band’s already eclectic variety of musical styles.
In their extensive musical career, Mother Rose has released singles and music videos for “In Moonlight”, “The Self-Seeker”, and “Passerby”, as well as a 4-song EP, Higher Than The Trees, on top of a slew of early demos.
The band then underwent a 3- to 4-year hiatus after their 2015 Higher Than The Trees tour. The hiatus concluded in the release of their first full-length album, The Man in All My Stories, in February 2020. Back in the fold, Mother Rose are fired up and ready to hit the stage again and gain the status of top Alternative Rock band in the LA music scene.
Check out their first, full-length album, The Man in All My Stories, available now on all music platforms, and catch them at a local show near you.
Ian Rivas was born and raised in Los Angeles, California by Guatemalan immigrants. At a young age, Ian was interested in music and received piano lessons in elementary school. In his middle school years, he developed an interest in alternative rock music and left the piano to pursue the guitar. Ian started as a self taught guitarist, but also took traditional classes as he progressed and took his practice more seriously. By the time Ian had finished middle school and entered the 9th grade, he and friends had created a new band.
The new band was called Midnight Riot and primarily focused on skacore alternative music. Ian took the mantle as the lead guitarist while also helping with backup vocals. In his time with Midnight Riot, Ian began learning the process of how to write and develop music. Midnight Riot played the Los Angeles ska scene for three years before finally disbanding. After the break up, Ian developed new tastes in music and wanted to leave the Ska scene for a modern rock style. While visiting his cousin Ruly, they were determined to write music together for a new band they called Mother Rose.
In the early years of Mother Rose, Ian helped develop the sounds that would be the base and launching pad for the new band. His musical style has been influenced and defined by the eclectic mix of musical artists and genres that he loves. Some artists include The Beatles, Pearl Jam, David Bowie, St. Vincent, and more recently, Inner Wave. Some genres include psychedelic indie, indie pop, soul, hip hop, psychedelic rock, and modern alternative rock.
Currently, Ian is listed as the lead guitarist in the band; however he is also credited for playing other instruments for Mother Rose. In the album “The Man in All My Stories”, you can hear Ian playing the bass, ukulele, and serving as a backup vocalist. During live stream performances, you can catch Ian also playing the piano. When he is not performing or writing music for Mother Rose, Ian works as a part-time middle school teacher. Ian continues to work hard on his song writing abilities and is hungry to learn more.
Edgar is a multi-instrumentalist who is currently bassist for Mother Rose. He was born in Texas, and lived in Mexico the first year of his life. When he was 1 year old, his family moved to the city of Huntington Park, California, where he lived most of his life. Edgar got involved with music in the 4th grade when he joined the school band as a percussionist. In the 6th grade, he began teaching himself how to play guitar, and his big brother, Jose, bought him his first guitar. After learning the guitar, he decided to move on to the bass and focused on making it his primary instrument.
In High School, he met his band teacher Mr. Almader, who became one of his biggest mentors in music. He picked up other instruments, mainly brass instruments, when he joined the marching band and the jazz band. He also went back to percussion while drumming for the drumline. His love for music grew over the years and because of that passion, he and his friends started playing in bands. This started happening in the 9th grade. The first band he played in was one made up of a group of friends that never really wrote any music and just hung out all day after school. They called themselves The Muffin Bandits. The band consisted of long time friends Ruly, David, Snoopy (all three of which are now a part of Mother Rose) and vocalist Luigi.
After having a go with The Muffin Bandits, he joined local Ska bands in the area as a trumpet or trombone player, eventually moving back to bass guitar when he joined a Hardcore Metal band called Act of Rage from Huntington Park. They had a good run making a small name for themselves in the local metal scene. Towards the end of Act of Rage, Edgar was asked by Snoopy (current drummer for Mother Rose) to play drums for his Ska band Rebellion-68 because Snoopy, who was their drummer at the time, wanted to be the vocalist. Ruly and Chris caught wind that Edgar was drumming and asked him to play drums for them for what would later become Mother Rose. That didn’t go so well, but after kicking out their bassist and realizing that Edgar was a bass player, they asked him to jump on as their new bassist, which lead to the beginning of the original lineup for Mother Rose.
While playing for Mother Rose, Edgar started helping other bands with bass. He was a substitute bass player for three local bands: Fused by Defiance (nu-metal), Best Supporting Actress (rock), and Sons of Eli (metal). Edgar continues to write and create beautiful music with Mother Rose, writing some of the more folk-, Americana-inspired songs. You know it’s a song that Edgar wrote if, during the song, you see him playing the guitar on stage. Edgar married the love of his life Christine in 2019, and they added a new little member to their family in 2020.
Snoopy was born and raised in Mexico, in a small city called Mazatlan. It was there where he teamed up with two friends and decided to make a band like Blink 182. None of them knew how to play an instrument, so they agreed that each person has to learn a different one in order to be able to make the band. Snoopy was supposed to play guitar, but the drummer decided to learn how to play guitar before learning how to play drums. Frustrated, Snoopy decided to just learn how to play drums; he convinced his entire family to pitch in to buy him a drum kit, and the adventure started. Neither of his two friends learned how to play the other two instruments. When he turned 15 years old, his mom took him and his sisters to LA, where he met Edgar Rose a few days after he moved in. From the beginning, they became close friends. Together they would hang out, play music, and go to shows.
Snoopy has played with multiple bands of different genres; Ska, Punk, Cumbia, Spanish Rock, and Alternative Rock. He never really cared about the music style, he would just play whatever fits the song. One day, Snoopy got a call from Edgar, and he asked Snoopy to drum for Mother Rose. Snoopy agreed and joined the team. A few years later the band decided that it was best for Snoopy to leave. It was sad for him, but he knew it was best because he was too distracted with personal affairs.
Snoopy continued playing with other bands, going to school and working full time. He kept hanging out with Mother Rose; they were all good friends, including Tony, their drummer at the time. Tony had to leave the band and Snoopy was asked to join again. Snoopy never felt that he was not part of the band, so it was an easy decision for him to come back.
Snoopy is open minded about music, but he prefers upbeat music with action and positive messages. He is now playing with Mother Rose, Rebelion 68, working, and going to UCLA.
